Woodchester yarns and fleece are exclusively produced from the flock of Cotswold sheep that graze the Woodchester House Estate, an eighteenth century house and arboretum in a valley south of Stroud. The estate consists of a mixture of native woodland and old pasture, springs and streams. The land is organically certified with the grazing managed for the wellbeing of the flock and to improve biodiversity in the valley.
The Cotswold sheep is a long-wool breed, now rare, with a good temperament that makes for inquisitive and friendly animals. The flock is selectively bred for the fineness of their fleece: the long staple of the fleece yields a particularly fine yarn and creates a natural lustrous sheen. Historically these characteristics made Cotswold fleece a luxury product and Woodchester House Yarns aims to bring this high-quality fibre back into contemporary use.
